Korean War

America, entered the Korean War, in the order to follow though with its new foreign policy. To contain communist. We went to war, due to the communist North Koreans invaded the Republic of Korea, also known as South Korea. Things had gotten this bad because of the failure of the US and USSR governments of 1945 to try and make things work out in dealing with Korea. Things would not be settled right and so things would be solved now in the cold war.  (Document A). So we went to stop them right away, because we could not let the North Koreans win because it would be a victory for the communist, and we could not let them have any victory. This would be the first time, that we would have to literately fight to try and stop communist. Because we did not want another Czechoslovakia and China, where we had not fight to try and stop the communist and had failed miserably, because both fell to the communist. Also it would not be the first time just for us that things would be done in a whole new way to try and achieve victory. (Document B). Korea was the first time the communist had use military force to try and spread, they normally did it by making or helping the economic and government of a place go down the tube. They would sabotage, help stop or would decrease a nation’s economy, and political stability. Because they knew that when things were going bad for a nation, that was when they could come in and install a communist government. Such as the case of China and Czechoslovakia (Document C). We, were not going to let communist spread, either by military take over, or take over in failing government/economic nations.

In early 1957 the Soviets would start a race of technology. The Soviets would take the lead and would start a mad race between US and Soviets in order to be the next nation with the next big break through. With the Sputnik launch, things would change because for once the Soviets would be ahead of us. The would be the first ones to have a satellite in orbit (Document D). In response to this action we would put into effect some new measures to try and stop this from every happening again. We just could not let the Soviets be ahead of us, it would be very bad for us in the cold war. So in response Congress created a new program, called NASA. This program would be the program that would be in charge of developing all the space technology for the nation, and would be the head for the race to stay ahead of the Soviets, in the field of space. Another task that Congress passed, was the National Defense Education Act. This act was to increase the sciences, mathematics, and foreign languages of the nation. Meaning more money to the schools for this, and better programs. With these increased the government was hoping to make sure that we would be able to compete against the Soviets on the means of intellect (Document E). So now we would not lose the next round of the fight of the technology race that was now in place. We were set to not let the Soviets win the next round of the technology race, because we knew that this would mean a end of our high morale against Soviets, and would just be a big downer for us. (Document F). The Soviets did win the one round, with the launch of Sputnik but they were not going to win again so easy, because we made adjustments to ensure this.
