The Similarities and Differences of Early Colonization of the New World

Thesis Statement: There are many things that are the same and different in the early colonization of the New World. Some of the most important ones are, the characteristics of settlers, the colonists relationships with the local Native Americans, and the characteristics of the colonies economies. These three traits range greatly in the colonies of the Spanish, and the British.

·        Body Paragraph 1:

o       Topic Sentence: The settlers of the Spanish and the British were very much different.

o       Supporting Evidence

A.     First off, the Spanish came for the big three Gs, God, Gold, and Glory, while the only some of the British in Plymouth came only for God.

B.      Then the settler of Jamestown came for land to live on.

C.      So the one real lasting thing that the Spanish and British settlers had in common was that they came for God.

D.    Now the Spanish settlers came and colonized all over the New World, and searched for gold, tried to enslave the Native Americans, and convert the locals.

E.      The British came to claim land, but nearly as much land as the Spanish.

F.      The British came for religious freedom in the north at Plymouth, while the people of Jamestown came for a new life and a little money.

G.    The first settlers of Jamestown were expecting to find lots of gold, and they did not so that ended that rather hastily when they started dying and the ones that did live went back to England.

H.    The Spanish came and converted and spread Christianity to the local Native Americans.

I.       So for the beginning gold was a trait shared by both, but God was the one trait that both shared for the whole time period, but in different ways.

·        Body Paragraph 2:

o       Topic Sentence: One thing that both the Spanish and the British shared, was the way they treated and co existed with the Native Americas.

o       Supporting Evidence

A.     Well for one, neither side was really nice to the Native Americans.

B.     At times settlers would trade with them, but the rest of the time was spent harassing, fighting, and massacring the Native Americans.

C.     The Spanish were forcing the Native Americans to convert to Christianity, to do hard physical labor, and just coming in close contact with the Natives spread diseases like small pox wiping out whole tribes.

D.    The English too, did their fair share of damage to the Native Americans, but traded as well at times.

E.     The people of Plymouth, and Jamestown for a while relayed on the trade with the locals, to just stay alive at times, and to learn how to survive in the new world.

F.      Then all that would suddenly change as soon, as the settlers wanted more land.

G.    So as soon as they wanted more land, war would erupt and the British would all out attack the Natives, and no mercy was given.

H.    The British even used calling peace talks to kill, by after settling disputes celebrating with drinks but the Indians Chiefdoms’ drink would be poisoned

I.       So Spain, and Britain shared the ideas of trade with the locals when needed, but as soon as they wanted land, or resources, or hard labor, they would go after the locals.

·        Body Paragraph 3:

o       Topic Sentence: The Spanish and British colonies economies were very much different.

o       Supporting Evidence:

A.     Mainly that the Spanish were after gold, wealth, and they always were on the look out for more of any form of it.

B.      Whether it is slaves, silver, gold, sugar cane, forced converting and forced taxation on locals, they were always looking for more.

C.      Now the British were very much different. Half the reason they settled in the new world was to get the Puritans out of England, and the other part was for a claim in the new world.

D.    Now yes the British did end up wanting money, but that was in Jamestown, through cash cropping tobacco.

E.     The only source of real money the British were going after for a while was tobacco, which was bringing in a lot of money due to John Rolfe.

F.      It was such a great of business that even King James I, allowed it even though he thought it was bad, for the body, and mind.

G.    So in a way the British colonys economy was after a little money like Spain, but Spain was after the big loot, which is very different from England.
