European In Southern East Asia

 

I. European In Southern East Asia

                1. This area was full of resources and potential wealth.

                2. In southeast Asia, new kingdoms were emerging. Most of all on the mainland.

                                1. Each country was fairly strong and independent.

                3. Islands of South East Asia, was much more vulnerable.

                                1. They had more resources.

                                2. Government of the islands was less centralized.

                4. First people to control the area around the Muslims.

                5. Europeans start coming.

                                1. Portuguese are first to arrive.       

                                                A. Admiral Albuquerque defeated the Muslims, and takes land for Portugal.

                                                B. Portugal can not dominate, the region. (They were not interested in colonizing.)

                                2. Melaka, a see port city setup by Muslims, but was used by Portugal.

II. Other Europeans

                1. English and the Dutch are both eyeing the area.

                                A. These, two wars Portugal for control of the trade.

                2.The Dutch that ultimately take control.

                                A. They had invested in two companies.

                                                1. Dutch East Indies, Companies (South East Asia)

                                                2. Dutch West Indies  Companies (Caribbean Sea)

                                B. East company dominate Asia made money.

                                                1. English get stuck in a port on the island of Sumatra.

                                                2. Dutch control the trade by limiting the number of ships coming in and out.
