Decline of Church Power

 

I. Decline of Church Power

                1. Over the years individual had worked to increase the power of the Papacy.

                2. Papacy, the position of the Pope.

                                A. Three people included.

                                                1. Gregory I take control of Papal land.

                                                2. Gregory VII fought with the kings to keep power for the pope.

                                                3. Pope Innocent III, believed in that the king was the moon and the sun was the pope in power.

                3. King Philip IV of France.

                                A. Wanted to tax the clergy men.

                                B. Pope Boniface VIII wont allow this.

                                C. Philip sends his enforcers to bring Boniface to France.

                                                1. During this struggle the Pope died from the stress and bad health.

                4. Philip helped plan the next Papal election.

                                A. Gives Clement V elected Pope.

                                B. Pope moves to Avignon, France in 1305.

                5. In 1377 the Pope finally comes back to Rome.

                                A. A new Roman Pope is elected Urban IV.

                6. Great Schism (1378-1417)

                                A. Romans support Urban VII.

                                B. France select their own Pope.

                                C. Both Popes declared that other the anti-Christ.

                                D. Council of Constance. 

                                                1. Give rid of both popes.

                                                2. Selected a new Pope.

II. Hundred years War (1337-1453)

                1. War between France and England.

                2. Kind Edward III of England was also the Duke of Gascony.

                3. French King Philip VI, wanted Edward out of France. (The area of Gascony was a area in northern France on the coast.)

                                A. Edwards refuses to leave, so Philip ends forces.

                4. Knights and fighting were important within society.

                                A. A new weapon show up the longbow.

                5. Early battles were won by the English.

                                A. Won at Crecy (1337)

                                B. Agincourt (1415)

                6. Joan de Arc

                                A. Help turned the tide for the French.

                7. France wins the war.
