Frankish Kingdom

 

I. Frankish Kingdom

                1. Over time the kings start to lost power to the major/leader of the Palace.

                2. A of these majors/leaders of the Palace actually made himself King.

                                1. His name is Pepin.

                3. When Pepin died his son Charles became King.

                                2. Charlemagne, the great Frankish King (768-814 A.D.)

                                                A. Last keeper of a major kingdom before feudalism.

                                                B. His actions:

                                                                1. Enlarged kingdom

                                                                2. Great patron of educations

                                                                3. Create Missi dominicci, which is Italy in which 2 people who are check-up group. They went around the kingdom and they made sure that they are going well and like they should.

                4. When Charlemagne died his kingdom is split into three ways to his great sons.

                                1. West, Middle, and East

II. The Invaders

                1. Vikings, came from Scandinavia.

                                A. Developed massive ships.

                                B. Extremely skilled fighters.

                                C. Most far from all the places they were invaded.  

                                D. Intermixed with the locals.

                2. Muslims, moving from Africa and Middle East.

                                A. Primarily moved into southwest Europe.

                3. Magyars, come from Asia.

                                A. First moved into what is modern day Hungry area, and then from their they moved on into Europe.

                4. With all the new people moving into the same land, fighting became no-stop.

                5. This made land very valuable.

                6. Helps lead to Feudalisms.

III. Feudalism

                1. Vassalage is the key to Feudalism. (Vassalage is trading your services to a lord for land.)

                2. Fief, a gift of land to a Vassal for his services.

                3. Homage, is were a vassal had made his verbal contract to work for the lord in exchange for a fief.

                4. Feudal contract, a verbal contract/agreement made in the public between a lord and a vassal.
